Sustainable (or ‘green’) buildings aim to preserve ecosystems and the environment while also providing benefits for people and society. One prime example is the Green Pea sustainable shopping centre in Turin. In December 2020 Green Pea the world’s first specialist retail centre dedicated to green sustainability, opened in Turin. Spread across five floors, it features 66 shops, a museum, three restaurants, a swimming pool, a spa and a club for creative minds – in total, a hundred partners who have all committed to the topic of sustainability. rschrieben haben.

Even the name Green Pea is, in effect, a declaration. Ultimately this diminutive legume is a symbol of respect; it is round like the Earth and as green as we should strive to be. Green Pea is a call to action, urging us to treat nature with respect and inviting us to indulge responsibly.
Buildings of the future
The Green Pea sustainable building is located in the direct vicinity of the world-famous Eataly slow food store and the former Lingotto Fiat factory, which was lavishly renovated and transformed into a modern multi-functional centre following its closure. The green building is therefore in good company when it comes to unique, future-oriented architecture.

The Green Pea building covers 15,000 square metres and is sustainably designed in every respect. Designed by architects Cristiana Catino (ACC Naturale Architettura) and Carlo Grometto (Negozio Blu Architetti Associati), the building is akin to a living organism. It aims to give people space to breathe and, through its beauty, highlight the importance of a more sustainable lifestyle. The 2,000 trees, plants and shrubs that surround the building further underscore this message. They offer people a green recreational space and offset greenhouse gas emissions.
Renewable power generation conserves natural resources
The centre’s sustainability concept also impresses from a technical perspective. For example, it draws on renewable energy through geothermal wells, photovoltaic and solar panels, wind energy systems and kinetic energy recovery systems. This reduces the demands on fossil fuels and conserves natural resources.

Saving on heating costs and improving energy efficiency
In addition to the use of renewable energy sources, energy efficiency plays a key role in a building’s sustainability concept. The lower the energy consumption for heating, lighting and building technology, the lower the CO₂ emissions.
Smart door systems reduce heat losses
Various measures can be taken to reduce a building’s energy consumption, from insulating façades to door technology. Every floor of Green Pea is therefore outfitted with a vestibule with two Slimdrive SLT-FR automatic telescopic sliding door systems. The narrow design and low installation height also enable usage in confined spaces with small clear opening widths or limited space next to the door opening, which is the case in the staircases of Green Pea.
